Interview with Mary McAleese, former President of Ireland (1997-2011), Dublin Castle, Ireland, 2017

Assistant Director, Cinematographer, Sound Recordist. Her Excellency is a work-in-progress multimedia documentary project about the rise of women who are heads of state around the world. Since the 1980 election of the world’s first woman president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir of Iceland, there have been an unprecedented number of democratically elected women heads of state. Despite this increase, in the past 10 years the percentage of women presidents and prime ministers have hovered between 6 to 7% of the world’s leaders. Women are also grossly underrepresented, including at the parliamentary and legislative levels.Though specific to each country, this phenomenon of women being elected into the highest position of leadership certainly speaks to changes in the social and cultural conditions that enable women to pursue high-level politics and to voters who desire such an outcome. Her Excellency is produced and directed by Anita Chang.
